LASIK is extremely safe surgery. Occasionally the doctor may call you more often or less often, depending on your progress. It is important that you note the follow up visit dates and visit the doctor on the appointed date and time.

Do follow the schedule for medications (i.e., eye drops) prescribed to you by your eye doctor. If you sometimes miss or forget to put a drop on schedule, put it in as soon as you remember, and put in the next drop on schedule.

Do handle the medication with clean hands, and don't inadvertently injure the eye in putting eye drops. If you find it difficult to put the drops, have a friend or relative put them for you. Keep the medication bottles in a clean, cool and dry place. Don't share medication bottles with someone else. If you inadvertently touch the open nozzle of the bottle, or it falls down, replace the bottle. You must protect yourself from infection.

While bathing, make sure you are not allowing soap or water to enter the eyes. Don't splash water into the eyes. If they feel dry, use artificial tears instead. Do however wash your face and area around the eyes (while keeping the eyes closed). Don't allow all manner of muck to accumulate on or around the eye lids.

Avoid activities where water or smoke will get into the eyes for the first couple of months after LASIK. Avoid smoky bars, avoid swimming, and avoid Jacuzzi's etc.

Do wear sunglasses while you go out into the sun, or in smoky and dusty areas.

Don't use eye makeup (i.e., eye shadow, eye liner) for around 2 months after LASIK or till you are on medication. Similarly don't wear cosmetic contact lenses for the time you are on medication.

For the first couple of months, avoid contact sports, or sports which may cause your eyes to get injured. Even after the first couple of months, please do take care that your eyes don't get poked or injured during sports or holi and so on.

Start doing all your normal activities after the first day, on which you should be taking it easy. Don't over strain your eyes post-LASIK, but don't be too conscious of having undergone the surgery. Just start living your life normally, and the more you use your new vision, the more likely you will recover fast.

If your vision suddenly gets blurred, or you get sudden sharp pain or your eyes get very red and angry, please do schedule a visit to your eye doctor as soon as possible. Don't overreact either; wait for a couple of hours for the symptoms to persist before raising the alarm.

On the cosmetic end of your windows, lets start with the most basic. Care for your eyes as though they are rare and precious jewels that are like no other. Sounds silly, but in reality you do only have those two. Before washing your face, remove all traces of eye makeup with eye makeup remover. I’ve recently found these great clothes that are made of micro fiber that you can wet and gently remove eye shadow, eyeliner and mascara without using any remover. One-Eyed National Health Care

National health care might be a disaster, due to the cost and the complexity. A government-controlled system also creates agonizing moral dilemmas (read about the eye treatment ruling covered further down). Still, despite my opposition to it, I can see it's a real possibility, and soon. Keeping that in mind, here is what we can do to solve some of the inherent problems and make the system work better.

What's Your QUALYs Score?

Who gets what health care? That would be a tricky decision for any of us, but some might argue that the bureaucrats in the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) are pretty good at it. They are evaluate and approve treatments for the National Health Services administration in Britain (their national health care bureaucracy). After all, the life expectancy in Britain is about the same as in the United States, and the government spends less on health care while covering ALL citizens.

Making such decisions, of course, does lead to some interesting problems. One example: In 2002 NICE recommended that a certain treatment for macular degeneration be used only in one eye - the one less affected by the disease. What about the other eye? It is presumably allowed to go blind. They arrived at this decision by using "QUALYs," or Quality-Adjusted Life Years.

How does this methodology for measuring the value of treatments work? Let's look at a couple examples. A surgery that gives you an average of ten years of life is better than one that gives you five, and so scores higher on the QUALYs scale. Years added to life matter, but so does quality of those years. Suppose you could be saved by a treatment but be in a coma for six years, while another person could be saved and healthy for six years by some other treatment. If funds are limited (aren't they always?), the latter would be approved.

Now let's look again at the case of the eye treatment. The score for QUALYs is high for the first eye, since seeing presumably greatly increases the quality of life over blindness. But seeing with the second eye doesn't boost the quality of life nearly as much, right?

We don't need to get into the complexities of the system to understand the logic. Life matters, but quality of life also matters, an idea most of us can agree to. But it leads to some uncomfortable conclusions, doesn't it?. For example a person with a debilitating disease or handicap presumably scores lower in QUALYs when considered for a life-prolonging heart operation. We might pass her over in favor of a healthier person who would benefit more according to the QUALYs score.

The real truth, normally ignored, is that there a financial limit to any national health care plan. As a result, we have to make decisions that can certainly be uncomfortable, and sometimes downright disturbing. What if a million dollars could prevent ten thousand people from getting a deadly disease, or that same million could be used to treat and possibly cure twenty people who already have the disease. Should we allow the twenty to die in order to prevent the deaths of ten thousand?

Of course, it's easy to say we should cure the twenty AND run the prevention program. This may even be possible, and we certainly could pay for both eyes to be treated in the case of macular degeneration. On the other hand, we really can't do everything. Honesty compels us to admit that perhaps going blind in one eye isn't nearly so tragic as losing sight in both, and if treating just one eye for one patient saves enough money to treat another patient's heart problem with a new procedure that saves his life, maybe we need to make that kind of decision.

Whatever utopian theorizing we do, tough choices will have to be made at some point if we decide on national health care. We'll need to put a value on life, or on various qualities of life at least. Yes, we may even have to put a value on one eye versus two, or on eyesight versus saved limbs that might be amputated otherwise. In a market system medical providers compete to provide better treatments for your diabetes, but this will be, in part, a system where your diabetes competes with somebody's migraine headaches or broken nose.

National Health Care - Some Suggestions

If we allow a market system of health care to exist alongside a government system, we could at least pay to have the other eye fixed. The rich will obviously get better care, but I don't think we are such a petty envious people that we would vote against such a dual-system just because of this. The healthiness of the wealthy doesn't hurt the rest of us. Also, we all would at least have the hope of raising money for whatever additional health care we desire. So let the market still exists.

There will also be the problem of demand. Free means higher demand, of course. At the moment I have a few teeth that I might have a dentist look at this week if the examination and treatment was free, but since it isn't I'll wait a bit. People often delay treatment because of the expense, but they also look for and find cheaper alternatives. That would change if we had free national health care.

There will be a big increase in demand. Naturally, cuts that might be bandaged will be more often be stitched if the service is without cost. A headache or sore throat that would normally be endured might mean a trip to the free hospital or clinic. Sadly, this would use government health care money that might otherwise pay for research or treatment for life-threatening illnesses, meaning more tough decisions.

How do we alleviate this problem of excessive demand? Design a system that isn't free. After all, the problem isn't that we have to pay for health care, since we find a way to pay for groceries, clothing and cable television without government handouts. The problem is the high price and unpredictability of health care expenses. An occasional surprise is one thing if it's a few hundred dollars, but a few weeks in a hospital can eat up a lifetime of savings.

Address THIS issue, instead of encouraging people's unwillingness to budget for unexpected, but affordable surprises? How? One way is to have national health insurance for all, but with a $500 annual deductible. When a person can't afford this (it amounts to $42 per month) it usually suggests a budgeting problem, not a problem of over-priced care.

Have each person pay 20% of all costs beyond that deductible as well, up to $1,000 ($5,000 in costs). This would keep people from running to the doctor or hospital for every little thing. This also encourages them to look for cheaper effective treatments, so the system doesn't destroy the usual incentive (money) for this creative process of health care improvement.

Prescription drugs shouldn't be covered until the cost goes beyond that $500 annual deductible, and even then the patient should pay his or her 20%. People (even poor people in this country) find a way to pay for bigger expenses in life, and this would keep the system from being abused. What if some people really are too poor to afford even this? Address that problem through general welfare programs, rather than paying for prescriptions for tens of millions who can easily afford them.

I am not thrilled with the idea of a national health care system. On the other hand, if it is going to happen in any case, we at least make it sustainable and leave open more options for all of us. That's what the system outlined above would hopefully accomplish.

Have you heard the age-old adage “Practice makes perfect”? And that is why, it is extremely necessary that to achieve something in life, we have to keep on trying until we get it. If you wished that you were ten kilos lighter, you would not just have a fairy mother appear to flick her wand and lighten you up, would you? You will go to no fairy land to lose your weight within a zip, but you will have to go to the Gym.

Exercising is an important system that keeps your body up to the notch of being completely fit and strong. You need to be active, free-spirited, and for that you need your one hour of sweat-job. Similarly, the same goes for everything else as well, even your eyes.

Yes, your eyes need your care and affection too, and even though some say that since they do not strain so much for being lodged in the same old place ever since you cried out at birth, they do not need so much of exercise after all. But that is wrong.

Have you seen little kids running around in the play ground sometimes wearing an eye patch? No, they are not playing the pirates of the seven oceans, but they actually have to wear it because of their eye problem which peculiarly, goes by the name “the lazy eye”. The trouble is exactly that: the eye is too lazy, and so it cannot adjust itself to the objects that are near or far away. The vision co-ordination is way off the mark, and to settle the issue, doctors advise that one eye is kept under eye-patch so that the other gets to practice vision synchronization perfectly.
Your eyes need their daily exercise, and if you do that, they will stay very flexible and fit. Daily movement and contraction of eye muscles will keep refractive visual inaccuracies like nearsightedness and farsightedness at bay.

When there is chronic tension and stress in the eye, the muscles in there elongate contract, and this leads to visual errors. Regular practice prevents the chronic stress to settle in and this keeps the eyes as keen as an owl’s.

•It is highly important to keep your eyes well lubricated since this coat of moisture washes away any harmful particles like dust. For this, make sure that you blink your eyes, or try blinking one eye at a time. Your tear glands are located under your upper eye lids, so they will keep the eye surface clean and wet.

•Also, try some other exercises every day, so that together, they will amount to take only half an hour of your precious time. Try the ‘Palming’ method. Here, make sure that you sit upright, and settle your elbows on high-raised cushions. With your palms cupped over your eyes to exclude light, try to relax and breathe slowly, and imagine blackness. Do not apply pressure on your eyes, and keep doing this for ten minutes for two or three times a day.

•The next process is a little funny, but fun to do! Close your eyes and imagine a circle. Pull it out to an oval shape in your mind, and start drawing an eight round it. You will have to think of your nose as the pencil and so you have to move your nose, head and eyes to form the required figures. This will bring about a good co-ordination among the various parts of your body, involving your eyes.

•Lastly, get an eye chart from your optician, and hang it up on the wall. By and by, when you are working or taking rest, take five minutes to look at the things written on the chart. Concentrate not only on the words, but the entire surrounding space and read out the sentences. Focus on the entire sentence as a whole, and this will allow your eye muscles to rest.

Try out these procedures and you will be able to keep your eyes fit and great. This way, you will not have to bear the cost of buying spectacles, or visiting the eye-doctor at all times, and yet, you eyes will be as good as a young child’s!

- Coriander (Coriandrum sativum) A decoction prepared from coriander can be used as an eyewash for people with conjunctivitis. There will be immediate reduction in the burning, redness and swelling of the eyes.

- Indian Gooseberry (Emblica officinalis) The Indian gooseberry, known as amalaki, is exceptional in treating ocular problems. It can bring relief in both conjunctivitis and glaucoma. Its juice is taken with honey for better effects.

- Indian Sorrel (Oxalis corniculata) The Indian Sorrel has exceptional properties in the treatment of several eye problems. A few drops of the juice of its leaves must be put in the eyes everyday to keep them free from strain. They can also be a good prevention for cataract.

- Marigold (Calendula officinalis) Marigold is taken as a cold infusion for washing eyes that are stressed. This brings a cooling effect to the eyes. It is also effective in cases of conjunctivitis.

- Parsley (Petroselinum crispum) The raw juice of parsley is effective for eye care. It can relieve the eyes of problems such as corneal ulcers, cataracts, weak eyes, conjunctivitis, opthalmia and sluggishness of the pupils.

Dietary Tips for Eye Care

Vitamin A is directly responsible for the strength and power of the eyes. Hence, foods that are rich in vitamin A must be taken. Vitamin A is contained in all orange and yellow colored vegetables such as carrots, oranges and pumpkins and in fruits like mangoes, papayas and oranges. Green leafy vegetables such as spinach, coriander and colocasia also contain vitamin A. Among non-vegetarian foods, fish, liver and eggs contain vitamin A. Dairy products also have a fair amount of vitamin A in them.

The risk of cataracts is reduced by including vitamin C in the diet. Foods containing vitamin C such as Indian gooseberry, guava, orange, lemon and tomato, capsicum, cabbage, etc. must be included in the diet.

Ayurvedic Treatments for Eye Problems

The triphala lotion is generally prescribed in case of eye problems. Triphala is a mixture of the two myroblans – belleric and chebula – and the Indian gooseberry. The choorna is soaked in water for half an hour to get the lotion. This lotion is used as an eye-wash three or four times in a day. Triphala lotion has potency to treat eye problems such as cataract and conjunctivitis. Washing the eyes regularly with triphala also keeps them moist and healthy.

Chandrodaya vati is another important Ayurvedic preparation used in eye care. It is made into a paste in water and then applied externally over the eyes. Chandrodaya vati is beneficial in the treatment of allergic conjunctivitis and cataract.

Home Remedies for Common Eye Problems

- Prepare a mixture of equal proportions of aniseed powder and coriander seed powder. Mix it with an equal weight of unrefined sugar. Take it in doses of 12 grams every morning and evening. It is beneficial for people with cataract.

- For people with weak eyesight, taking a mixture of the juices of raw parsley and carrots in a glassful amount everyday will provide great benefits.

- Mix one part of sugar with three parts of coriander. Grind them into a fine powder and put this mixture in boiling water. Keep it covered for one hour. Then filter it with a clean cloth. Use the filtrate as eye drops. This is an effective treatment for conjunctivitis.

- Immerse almonds in milk and keep them overnight. In the morning, mix this milk with sandalwood. Apply this on the eyelids. This reduces redness of the eyes due to exertion.

- Inhaling the odors of sesame mixed in honey reduces the excessive wateriness of the eyes.

- Take two small pieces of cardamom. Grind them and dissolve the powder in milk. Boil the milk and drink it at night. This makes the eyes healthier.
