Choosing Eye Glasses - Fashion and Function

Thursday 28 January 2010

These days, eye glasses seem to be less and less about vision correction and more and more about fashion. Stylish frames are easy to find, and options abound more than ever before. Many people wear contact lenses for vision correction, and choose one or two pairs of frames that they change, depending on their mood and the type of look they'd like to achieve. Of course, not everyone has this luxury, but some people even wear non-prescription lenses just to have frames for fashion purposes! With all the options available, how do you choose the best frame style for your face? Obviously, there is no substitute for trying on glasses before you buy them, but there are a few guidelines to follow in order to choose the most flattering and fashionable frames.

First of all, start by studying your face shape. Is it round, oval, or heart-shaped? Is it then or more full? These will be important factors. For a round face, choose rectangular frames for balance. Those with a heart-shaped face usually look best with lenses that balance the face by being wider at the bottom (but only slightly so). Oval faces, on the other hand, can wear nearly any style of frames and lenses. If you have small features, be sure to look at frames with small lenses. Large lenses will overwhelm the face and look outdated. If you have a narrow face, you will also be somewhat limited in your choices, as the frame of the eye glasses should not be any wider than the widest point of your face. These will simply look too big and will also overwhelm the face.

Beyond shape, also consider the material of the frames, and the color. Heavy, plastic frames can work for some people, but for others, they may be too severe. Light or fair-skinned people should shy away from dark, harsh colors such as black. Light colors will usually be most flattering. Rimless frames are another popular choice. With these eye glasses, the frame material does not surround the lenses, but the arms and nose piece simply connect to the lenses. These subtle frames are best for those who wish to minimize the look of the glasses on their face. Since color isn't usually much of a factor with rimless frames, the shape is most important here. With a little bit of research and some trial and error, most anyone can find glasses that flatter their face and pull double duty with both fashion and function!

Eyesight Correction That You Need to Try

Monday 25 January 2010

Will your eyesight suffer from astigmatism for good? Is it possible that you can improve your vision without letting your optician prescribe you new glasses? Can you let your eyes be free of eye glasses dependency for good? Here are the answers.

What is astigmatism?
Astigmatism is a medical term for a blurred vision that is caused by the irregular curve of the cornea. In this condition light rays will enter the eye not in the right focus on the retina, creating a blurred image. In simple words, astigmatism is an image distortion that is caused by improper shape of the cornea.
Two types of astigmatism that are common are corneal astigmatism that is caused by an irregular shape of the cornea and lenticular astigmatism which is caused by an irregular shape of the lens.

What causes astigmatism?
In corneal astigmatism, the light that comes into the cornea does not refract properly causing the retina receive an imperfect image.

In lenticular astigmation, the irregular shape of the lens is responsible for the imperfect images that reach the back of the eye (retina).

What are the symptoms of astigmatism?

The most common symptoms of astigmatism are:

* Blurred or distorted image at short or long distance
* Sensitivity to light
* Headaches
* Eye squints (as an attempt to see an object more clearly)
* Eye strain - when eye is forced to focus for a long period.

How astigmatism is diagnosed?

Your ophthalmologist or optometrist may use the following tools to examine your vision:

1. Visual test which involves reading letters on a chart. Optician may suspect that you have astigmatism if you see the letters become progressively smaller on each line.
2. Astigmatic dial chart which shows a series of semi-circle lines. People with astigmatism will not see the lines equally clear.
3. Ophthalmometer: an instrument for measuring the reflection of an image on the surface of the cornea and other capacities of the eye, to determine the degree of astigmatism.
4. Keratoscope (Placido's disk): an ophthalmic instrument to assess the shape the anterior surface of the cornea. If a patient is suffering from astigmatism, the reflection of a series of concentric rings that are projected onto the cornea are seen distorted.

What are the treatments for astigmatism?

Corrective lenses
Corrective eye glasses or contact lenses are used to bend the coming light rays to correct the faulty refraction so that the images will be received properly by the retina. However, corrective lenses cannot cure astigmatism. It is widely believed that dependency on glasses or contacts may weaken your eye muscles and will make your eyes lazy.

Laser eye surgery (PRK, LASEK or LASIK)
In eye surgery, the doctor will remove cornea and make it into a proper shape, then he will put the cornea back into the eye. Patients may feel pain and uncomfortable for a certain of period and need sometime for the eye to recover. Eye vision won't be stabilize for over a month.

One thing that you have to consider: eye surgery is expensive and can cause scar tissue that is not guaranteed will disappear. Scar tissue usually will be less flexible than normal tissue, leaving it to become disable to adjust to different circumstances.

Vision Therapy
Vision therapy is an alternative treatment for vision correction to improve astigmatism as well as other eyesight problems such as nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and presbyopia (old-age blur) without the use of eye glasses / contact lenses or eye surgery. The therapy is designed to re-educates the eyes and mind about the habits of seeing clearly and naturally. The program includes eye exercises, eye relaxing therapy, far and near training eye-charts that are easy to follow.

Many have claimed that this method is effective to improve astigmatism in a safe and inexpensive way.

Eye Exercises to Improve Vision - Is it Possible?

Wednesday 13 January 2010

Eye exercises to improve vision - is it possible that after all these years of glasses and contacts prescriptions, that if you could have simply made a few changes to your daily routine you would be able to see clearly again? According to some rumors floating around the internet and other places in the public domain, the answer is an indefinite "maybe."

According to online polls, around 60% of people find that they were able to improve their eyesight naturally after initially being told that they needed glasses. They get it via performing simple vision exercises that required no more than the use of their eyes. Does this mean we should throw our glasses out now? Probably not, but it may mean that some of these eye exercises may help you out. Before trying any of them, one should make sure that it's OK with their optometrist, but here are a few that might be useful.

It is possible that eye exercises to improve vision can strengthen the eye muscles and lead to a notable increase in ability to focus on objects. A 2-3 minute exercise can be done in which the vision is focused on the thumb held about 10 inches away from the face, and then on an object 10-20 feet away. Taking a breath is a good marker upon which to switch focus from near to far or vice-versa. The flexibility of the eye muscles can be greatly aided by tracing your vision over an imaginary figure eight 10 feet in front of you. By tracing it slowly one way for a few minutes and then reversing direction, this can help increase the eye's ability to move to and track an object. Like with any exercise program, what you will get out of this depends on what you put into it! Happy exercising

Eyelid Surgery - The Procedure For Men - What to Consider

Tuesday 5 January 2010

The eyes are where most attention is given during conversation. So it is no wonder that as we age it can become uncomfortable to have our eyes to start looking wrinkled, worn and tired looking-and giving others the impression that this state of our eyes reflects who we are and how we feel.

So it shouldn't be a surprise that eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is the second most common plastic surgery procedure performed on men. The surgery is designed to reverse the loss of elasticity that causes one's eyelids to fall during the aging process. It can also fix the excess skin that can accumulate around the eyelids making the eyes seem lost and less energetic.

So what should a man know when considering this procedure?

First, interview many plastic surgeons and give yourself plenty of time to do so in order to avoid making a hasty decision. You'll want to find a surgeon who has experience with this specific procedure which is a delicate one. Ask plenty of questions and make sure that you feel comfortable with them and that they take a personal interest in your goals and medical history.

Once you have made a decision, be open and honest with your doctor and carefully follow their pre and post-operative instructions closely to ensure your health, safety and best results. Always remember that this is a surgery event though is usually done as an outpatient surgery.

The surgeon can be in better position to help you in operative care before the actual surgery if he or she knows about your medical history. Thereby he can give you a realistic expectation of what to expect during the recovery stage of this procedure that can last several weeks.

The healing process may include swelling, bruising, irritation or dry eyes, discomfort and possible irritation of the incision site. These side effects can be controlled with medication, cold compresses and ointment. A patient must observe careful sun protection and wear darkly tinted sunglasses until healing is complete.

While final results will appear within several weeks, it may take up to a year for incision lines to fully refine. While eyelid surgery can be expected to correct certain conditions permanently, a recipient will continue to age naturally. Life-long sun protection will help to maintain results. A man can have positives to take from this procedure if he has realistic expectation of what to expect from it in long term.
